Compare Water Treatment Systems – 5 Things to Consider Before You Buy

Boy did I learn a valuable lesson. I was shopping for home water treatment systems and settled on a reverse osmosis system. Unfortunately, I believed the whole sales pitch about it and got duped into buying an expensive system that is not even that effective compared to other systems. I realized that in order to keep others from making the same mistake as me, I needed to teach them how to compare water treatment systems. Here are 5 things that you definitely need to consider before settling on one system or brand.

1. Does the water treatment system filter out inorganic chemicals? With some research, you’ll find that reverse osmosis and distillation do not remove all synthetic chemicals and have to be used in conjunction with a carbon filter. Carbon filters on the other hand, effectively remove inorganic chemicals as well as organic ones.

2. When you compare water treatment systems, find out if the water is stripped of its mineral content. Drinking water containing minerals is important to health. Drinking demineralized water can cause a host of health problems, including cancer. The people who live the longest, most disease-free lives in the world all live near bodies of water with high mineral content. Reverse Osmosis and distillation strip minerals from the water, whereas carbon block filters only remove contaminants and not healthy minerals.

3. Look into the cost per gallon. If you take costs into consideration when you compare water treatment systems, carbon filters are in the lead at a little under 10 cents per gallon. Distillation costs 20 to 26 cents per gallon and reverse osmosis costs 18 to 24 cents per gallon.

4. Find out how quickly the water can be filtered or purified by each of the water treatment systems. Reverse Osmosis and Distillation are infamous for being slow, producing less than a gallon per hour.

5. In this day and age, it is becoming more and more popular to “go green” and understandably so. Going green should also apply when you compare water treatment systems. The most effective systems don’t produce any wastewater. Reverse Osmosis, for example, wastes 2 to 3 gallons of water for every gallon of water it produces.

Your goal? Use this information to help you compare water treatment systems. You’ll know you found the right water treatment if it is inexpensive, fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly. By doing your homework, you won’t make the same mistake I did.
